This group does have some Christian based aspects, such as encouraging scripture verses and ending in prayer, but women from all backgrounds are welcome!

As the age old phrase says: you are what you eat. 😋

What we eat and nourish our bodies with makes all the difference. In a society filled with processed and “fake” foods, nutrient poor produce and pasteurized dairy we are missing so much of what our ancestors used to rely on to stay alive and keep healthy. While nutrition is important for everyone, all the time, there is an even bigger emphasis on nutrition when it comes to women who are trying to conceive, currently pregnant and postpartum/breastfeeding.

The process of conceiving a child and then carrying and nourishing that child post birth are extremely nutrient demanding tasks for the body to take on! For ages, cultures have had “sacred” and go to foods for those in these stages of life as they had observed over thousands of years the good outcomes that came from consuming certain foods.

While I would love to say this is a topic I know tons about, I do not. It’s an area I am hoping to grow in so I can help clients, friends and myself be the best we can be! I finally took the dive and ordered these babies here and am so excited to grow more in this area and learn how to help care for the bodies of our precious mothers and mothers to be out there ❤️

A wonderful post from @revelatori on sitting with discomfort! Every word here can be linked to how we can view our labor! Yes, labor is often intense and uncomfortable, but when we lean into the surges, stop fighting what our body is doing and work with it, we come out stronger (and with a super cute baby to cuddle 🥰). Labor is 90% a mental game! If you let yourself get all tensed up and dreading the next contraction, you will have a much harder time coping than if you settle in, breathe with your body and notice the WORK that is being done with the sensations you are feeling. You’ve got this mama! You were made to do this and you CAN do this! 💖

It was such a privilege to serve this mama! When complications led her to be induced early, she didn’t let this change get her down! She powered through and took control of her birth experience resulting in an unmedicated birth just as she had hoped for!

Even when it seems like a huge wrench is thrown in your birth plan, it doesn’t mean all your other birth goals go out the window. And with a doula by your side, you are in great hands to make sure your wishes are upheld as closely as possible!

While a home birth may not be the best option for everyone, it is a great option for many, and certainly for myself! I felt so supported and free during my labor. Even though it was a rough go with tons of back labor and back to back contractions, I was only ever thankful that I was in the comfort of my own home to take on this adventure. I was still working in the hospital L&D unit at the time and just kept thinking how glad I was to not be strapped to monitors, have people coming in and breaking my focus or causing undue stress.

No matter how many times you see it… it is still one of the most miraculous things to witness on this planet ❤️🥰

Please know that in a normal physiological birth this is part of a baby’s reflex. Note a couple amazing things:

This baby is free to move as intuitively needed. There is no hat, her vernix is fresh on her body. There are towels but only because they had just gotten out of the tub.

The cord is still attached. 🪢 each step reflex the baby makes she gently presses on mama’s belly to help her placenta release. Tell me that isn’t part of the perfect design of this. ⭐️

Mom’s nipples are making colostrum which smells like amniotic fluid. A familiar smell for baby to seek and find. ❤️

There is also a couple other things the help in this process… the darkening of mom’s nipples, the pheromone smell of moms body odor, maybe even possible the línea negra on mom’s belly. It’s all part of this incredible system.

I always encourage parents to be intuitive, you can see how dad reaches out his arm so she didn’t fall. There is no right or wrong way to do this. ❤️

All you need is the patience and trust to allow this to all unfold ❤️

Acknowledging that you miss aspects of your life pre-kids doesn’t mean you don’t love your life now! Going from living your life for yourself to living for your children can be a huge transition! You go from being able to go where you want, when you want to having to plan every little thing you do around your baby. This can be overwhelming and often leads moms to feel isolated or have the ever glooming “mom guilt”. Allow yourself to actually and properly grieve and process this change (either with your husband, friends, family or a therapist if needed!). When a woman births her baby, it is not only the baby that is born, but a new woman, a mother is born, too!

But as part of your grieving, learn to adapt! I also highly encourage you to find aspects of your pre-mom life that you can still keep in your “new life”! Sure, things may look different than before having a baby, but I have a secret 🤫 Babies are highly adaptable little guys! For example, I love thrifting or going to grab coffee with a friend. Find ways to bring baby with you! Learn about baby wearing so baby can nap while you’re out so you aren’t restrained to their nap schedule. Maybe you love traveling. Bring the baby along! Yes, your travels will look different than before but you can still go amazing places with a baby in tow!

Life doesn’t have to stop when you have a child! Find new ways to bring your child along in life with you! ❤️

POV: you’re in labor and your provider is trying to speak to you during contractions 🙃

Too many times I have encountered a doctor, nurse or some other hospital employee trying to talk to a laboring mama about something while she’s in the middle of a contraction. Sometimes it’s a relevant topic, but sometimes it’s asking questions like “what are your plans for post partum birth control?”. Seriously, I had a nurse ask my client that while she was breathing through contractions and I was holding counter pressure on her back! Or as a nurse, I had an anesthesiologist look at me annoyed when the mama didn’t answer his questions right away as he gave his “informed consent” for an epidural while having obvious contractions 🙄

Having a solid support team with you to help keep distracting questions out of your mental space is a huge help! Let Dad answer what admission questions he can, your doula can help talk about the birth plan. Let yourself just drift off into labor land and not worry about anything else!

I always advise clients, once you get into a more active labor pattern you will not want to be making decisions! Instead of asking, “do you want water?” Or “do you want to go to the bathroom?”, say things like “here is some water *hold water with straw in front of mama*” or “let’s go to the bathroom”. This gives you the ability to just wave away the water or turn and grab a sip, start moving toward the bathroom or indicate you aren’t interested right now. Stay focused on being in the labor zone and creating your safe space for baby to arrive! And if someone is trying to talk to you when you are not in a place where you can communicate, don’t be afraid to tell them to stop!

What an amazing weekend at Dr. Stu’s #reteachbreech workshop! I feel so empowered after learning these skills! Even as a doula who does not aid in delivery in this way, these skills are crucial for a birth worker to have in case you are in a situation where you have to step up and take action! What if your client is delivering at home and the midwife hasn’t arrived yet? Her labor is progressing quickly and baby is breech?

I’m so thankful for this opportunity to learn these “dying” skills and feel even more confident to advocate for the re-normalization of breech and twin birth! And all my central Indiana people, you can feel assured that all our home birth midwives were here to learn more and do better for you all! The first video is me practicing the breech extraction maneuver and the next video is the internal podalic version (where baby is presenting head down but you push them back UP inside and then FLIP them around to a breech position for a quick delivery in times of distress).

In a perfect world, our doctors, nurses and midwives would take us at our word and honor our birth choices. But unfortunately that’s not always the case. And also unfortunately, women are often not taken seriously on our choices either! When our choices go “against” typical medical practice it can be seen as “uneducated” and “unimportant” by those who should be caring for you. When Dad steps up and voices your wishes it can often be a shocking occurrence as many dads sit by quietly without any objection. Even as a doula, if your provider or nurse is anti-doula, they may not take our voice seriously either. Encourage Dads to use their powerful voice to fight for your informed choice and decision making. This can be important through pregnancy as well as during birth! Bring Dad to your prenatal appointments so your provider knows from the start you have a strong support system who will not back down from how you choose to go through pregnancy and birth!

Pro tip: a bassinet is not the only place for a baby to sleep! I know some moms get nervous not strictly following the “back is best” in a bassinet rules but contact naps can be so comforting for your baby! Closeness to mama is what our babies crave ❤️

So much of our labor journey relies on our mind’s abilities to cope 🧘🏼‍♀️, not just our body’s 💪🏻! When women think of birth, their thoughts go to the physical first. But we also need to remember the importance of our mindset for a successful labor and birth! Here are 3 tips for focusing in on a strong mind for labor!

1. Give yourself permission to rest! There’s so much pressure from our world to do more no matter our circumstances. As you inch closer to birth, start to lessen your workload and other responsibilities. Sign off a chore to your husband, create boundaries for physical labor at work or talk to your boss about needing to sit instead of stand all day. Taking time to rest your body will help relax your mind and decrease stress. Too much stress is the enemy of a smooth labor. Your pregnancy and birth will function at its best if your body thinks it is safe and supported. Be kind to yourself and your growing baby and sit back, kick your feet up and relax!

2. Foster a positive mindset! I often talk with clients about the fear-tension-pain cycle. When our mind is bombarded with potential issues that could arise in pregnancy and labor we can get caught up in the what-ifs which can wear on our mind and cause anxiety, stress and fear. Those fears and stress lead to increased tension throughout the body. Tension leads to pain and discomfort. Working to decrease your fears around birth before labor is very important! Avoid negative birth stories and talk about your worries with your doula or another trusted person.

3. Practice relaxation techniques! Many of us struggle with knowing how to truly relax. Look up videos for guided full body relaxation. Pay attention to all the little parts of your body holding tension. Become more aware of your body to focus in on the parts that often go ignored (the space between your eyebrows, your fingers and toes). Practice meditation, deep breathing or find unique things to you that bring you peace (a special playlist or cozy blanket makes all the difference)!

This week (and always honestly!) we celebrate our midwives who put their trust in women’s bodies to carry and birth their babies. Midwifery is one of the oldest crafts. 1/3 On July 14, 2022 we welcomed our surprise little girl into this world with an amazing home birth experience. I woke up that morning around 2:30am and noticed I was having contractions. I wasn’t sure if this was the real deal or not as I was only 37+5 weeks at this time. I got up and tried a couple things (eating a snack, hydrating, warm bath) to see if the contractions would subside but they only got stronger very quickly over the next 2 hours. My husband woke up around 4:45am to go workout and found me in the tub. Soon after I told him not to go to his workout or to work today, I was pretty sure this was real labor! We contacted my doula and midwife at 6:30am. At this time I was already having trouble talking through contractions. They were very close together with little relief and I was starting to have some pretty intense back labor(which would continue through the entire labor!). I labored with just my husband for support. As this was 2 weeks early, and I had convinced myself I would definitely go into labor after my due date I had very little ready! My husband was Superman and got everything set up while also supporting me through the back labor with counter pressure when he could. I tried to force myself to eat some food as I was STARVING, but it was tough to eat much in my small time between contractions. I spent about 2 hours attempting to place a target pickup order between contractions for some things that we really needed for the birth and once I eventually succeeded my mother in law picked it up for us 🥰

My doula arrived around 11am, at this point I was back in the tub. She decided we should have the midwife come as it appeared I was moving decently fast. My midwife and her assistant arrived around noon. She asked if I wanted a cervical check and I said yes. I had been feeling tons of pressure and felt baby was super low and was starting to feel a little pushy. At this time I was 5cm and almost fully effaced... *continued in comments*

Aka the "Get it done position." 💪🏽 Most of my clients know that I love using the toilet for labor. It's the best way to release a pelvic floor and help a baby descend into the pelvis. The contractions are super intense on the potty, but that's because they are super productive! Trust me when I tell you, this is one of the all time best labor positions!

🚽you are naturally prone to relaxing your pelvic floor and perineum while sitting on the toilet.
🚽the bathroom is a place of privacy and solitude and you are used to relaxing in this room.
🚽you are using gravity
🚽you are opening your pelvis.
🚽you are allowing your baby lots of room to rotate and navigate the birth canal.
🚽you can also turn around and straddle the toilet with a pillow in front of you for comfort.

I call it the “dilation station” for a reason. I’ve encouraged many mommies to spend some time laboring on the toilet. It’s not uncommon for baby to come rather quickly after that 🤗
